Cloudflare Security & Edge Network
Cloudflare security & edge network.
The outer layer of the environment: traffic is inspected and filtered before it reaches origin infrastructure.
We deliver edge security deployments to defend enterprise applications, secure remote access, and accelerate content delivery — designed, deployed and operated as a managed Cloudflare service from Singapore.
The perimeter is deployed directly on Cloudflare’s global network, so volumetric attacks, malicious bots and web exploits are mitigated at edge nodes rather than at the origin. Access control and content delivery are configured as part of the same layer, which keeps inspection, routing and caching behaviour consistent across the estate.
Why the edge is the right place for the perimeter
Every request to an internet-facing application has to be inspected somewhere. When that inspection happens at the origin — on a firewall appliance, a load balancer or the web server itself — the malicious traffic has already consumed your bandwidth and your compute before it is rejected. A large enough volumetric attack fills the pipe before any rule has a chance to run.
Cloudflare moves that inspection to the network edge: more than 300 cities, every one of them announcing the same anycast addresses. A DDoS attack is spread across the entire network rather than aimed at a single point, and application-layer rules — the Web Application Firewall, bot management, rate limiting — execute before a byte reaches the origin. The origin can be locked down to accept connections only from Cloudflare, which removes the direct-to-IP attack surface entirely.
The same edge that filters traffic also caches it and routes it. Static assets are served from the node nearest the user, dynamic requests are routed over Cloudflare’s private backbone rather than the public internet, and DNS resolves from the same anycast network. Security and performance are one configuration, not two products.
What we configure
Web Application Firewall. Managed rule sets covering OWASP categories, Cloudflare’s own threat intelligence, and custom rules written against the application’s actual request patterns — URL structures, expected headers, legitimate geographies. Rules are deployed in log-only mode first, reviewed against real traffic, then moved to challenge or block.
DDoS mitigation. Layer 3 and 4 protection is always on and needs no tuning. Layer 7 mitigation is configured with sensitivity appropriate to the application, with rate limiting on authentication endpoints and APIs where a low request volume is still abusive.
Bot management. Verified crawlers — search engines, monitoring services, partner integrations — are allowed explicitly. Everything else is scored, and traffic that behaves like automation is challenged or blocked according to what the endpoint can tolerate.
Zero Trust access. Internal applications are published through Cloudflare Access with policies based on identity provider group, device posture and location. Cloudflare Tunnel connects origins outbound so no inbound firewall port is opened. WARP provides the client-side connection for the remote workforce, replacing the VPN concentrator.
CDN, DNS and origin protection. Cache rules by path and content type, cache invalidation wired into the deployment pipeline, authoritative DNS with DNSSEC, and Authenticated Origin Pulls so the origin rejects any connection not carrying Cloudflare’s client certificate.
Who this is for
Organisations with public-facing applications or APIs that need to stay available under attack; teams replacing a VPN with identity-based access for a distributed workforce; companies with origins on both AWS and GCP that want inspection consistent across both. We work with in-house engineering teams and with organisations that have no network security function of their own.
Cloudflare is the outer layer of a three-layer engagement. Behind it, we deploy and manage the AWS and Google Cloud environments the traffic is routed to, so the perimeter and the compute are designed as one path rather than negotiated between two vendors.
Advanced DDoS Protection & WAF
Layer 3, 4, and 7 threat filtering to protect APIs and web properties against volumetric and application-layer attacks.
Zero Trust Access & SSE
Identity-aware access policies replacing legacy VPN architectures to secure remote workforce connectivity.
Edge Performance & CDN
Custom caching rules, DNS management, and global edge routing to lower latency and optimise page loads.
- 01
Assessment
Review of the current traffic path, exposed origins, DNS configuration and existing access architecture.
- 02
Perimeter design
Filtering rules, access policies and caching behaviour are defined against the application's actual traffic profile.
- 03
Deployment
Staged rollout with rules applied in monitoring mode before enforcement, so legitimate traffic is verified before it is filtered.
- 04
Operation
Ongoing rule tuning, DNS management and traffic inspection as the application and its threat profile change.
